Our analytical capabilities include microscopy via electron beams, force probes and visible light; nanomechanical and nanotribological probes. The light microscopes have expanded to include macroscopes as well as inverted and upright light microscopes equipped with digital cameras from Lecia, Nikon, and Olympus. After preparing a sample in the metallography lab, microstructures can be examined in bright field, dark field, polarized light, and differential interference contrast (DIC). The light microscope bends a beam of light at the specimen using a series of lenses to provide a clear image of the specimen to the observer. In this lab, parts of the microscope will be reviewed.
